Safer Gambling
Limits set before money moves are the only tools that never arrive too late.

Controls worth setting before the first deposit
A licensed account carries a small set of controls, and every one of them does its real work before a deposit rather than after. Deposit limits cap what an account can take over a day, a week or a month, so the ceiling you choose applies to the next decision instead of depending on it. A time-out closes the account for a stretch you pick in advance, and it runs its course before the account reopens.
Reality checks interrupt a session at set intervals and show how long it has run, which gives the clock a voice it would not otherwise have. Each setting is chosen once and then applied by the account itself, which removes the negotiation a decision taken mid-session always invites. None of the three takes longer than a minute to set, all of them sit in the account menu, and they hold on the evening when deciding afresh is hardest.
GAMSTOP in plain words
GAMSTOP is the free self-exclusion scheme, and it covers every online operator holding a Gambling Commission licence that serves Great Britain. One registration reaches the whole licensed market rather than one account at a time, which is the design: closing doors one by one leaves too many of them open. The terms run for a minimum of six months, with one-year and five-year options on top, so the shortest exclusion is still measured in months rather than evenings.
An active term cannot be cancelled either. Once the exclusion is running, it holds until the term you chose has passed, and that refusal to bend is the point of the tool. The days when you would most want to undo it are the days it exists for.
Where the scheme stops
An honest page marks the edge of its own tools. Sites without a British licence sit outside GAMSTOP entirely, because the scheme’s reach runs to Gambling Commission licensees and no further. An exclusion registered there covers licensed operators only, and it follows the public register rather than the person. That boundary is written into the scheme itself, not into small print on any single site.
An offshore site publishes no British register entry, offers no approved route for resolving disputes and is not bound by the British credit card ban, so the protections set out earlier on this page do not travel with it. No tool on any page of this site changes that, and nothing here is written to talk anyone past an exclusion. If the licence behind a site is not British, the scheme does not reach it.
Who to call and where to read
The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, is free, confidential and open around the clock on 0808 8020 133, and it takes calls from anyone affected by gambling harms in Britain, whether the harm is theirs or someone else’s. There is no threshold for the call: a question about limits counts as much as a crisis. Calling early follows the same logic as setting a limit early: both use a calm moment rather than a difficult one.
Alongside the phone line, BeGambleAware publishes self-assessment and self-help tools and funds the National Gambling Treatment Service, while GamCare runs forums and treatment routes of its own. Reading before a decision costs nothing, and neither does the call. If you would rather not speak, the written tools are a reasonable first step; if you would rather not type, the phone line is the shorter route.
Arithmetic before money moves
Every calculation on this site exists to make terms readable before money moves: a multiplier turned into a sum of money, a cap turned into a ceiling you can picture, a payout window turned into dates on a calendar. Numbers do not talk a decision up or down; they only make the price visible while the price is still the point. A term that reads clearly at a kitchen table reads very differently at a checkout at midnight, and the gap between those two readings is what the arithmetic exists to close.
If the reading ever stops being calm, the helpline is the right next click, and the controls described in the first section are the right ones to set while the mood holds. Both arrive ahead of the deposit, and ahead is the only timing worth having.
